Frutta: Lighting Redefined

Revolutionizing Home Lighting with a Fruit Tree-Inspired Lamp

Frutta, a unique floor lamp design, draws inspiration from the simple joy of picking fruit, a nostalgic childhood experience. The designers aimed to enrich people's lives by offering limitless lighting solutions through a blend of clever design and user imagination. The result is a lamp that not only illuminates spaces but also invites interaction and personalization.

What sets Frutta apart from conventional lighting units is its innovative modular system. Traditional home lighting often lacks flexibility due to its singular unit design. In contrast, Frutta allows users to customize and control their environment's lighting. The concept of "picking" lights off the Frutta lamp, as if they were fruits from a tree, fosters an intimate and natural relationship between the user and the lighting.

Constructed from steel and ceramic, Frutta is both sturdy and aesthetically pleasing. The main component measures 160 x 160 x 1080 mm, while the individual lighting units are 110 x 110 x 110 mm. These detachable lights can be reattached to optional cradles, giving users control over how light is distributed throughout their space.

Frutta offers three main functions. Firstly, it enables multiple people within a space to control and customize their own lighting needs. Secondly, it allows users to adjust the lighting to fit their mood or the atmosphere they want to create. Lastly, unlike singular lighting units that often result in uneven lighting, Frutta can spread out to provide even, natural ambient lighting throughout a room.

The project, which began in February 2020 in Tokyo, faced the challenge of introducing an emotional experience to lighting, typically an inorganic product. The designers successfully overcame this by creating a lamp that offers an intimate and nostalgic experience. Their efforts were recognized when Frutta was awarded Silver in the A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award in 2020, a testament to its outstanding design and innovation.
